The Montérégie

Region 15, IPA Montérégie is one of the three IPA regions of Quebec. It was founded in May 2001 at the General Assembly of IPA Canada in Hamilton Ontario by Mr. Gerry Desève, then an officer with the Longueuil Police. Located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, between Montreal and the American border, it is bordered to the east by Highway 55. The territory includes a large part of the regions of the Eastern Townships, Centre-du-Quebec and the Montérégie region.

The Montérégie appellation owes its origin to the hills which emerge from the plain and which are called "Montérégie". The Saint-Bruno, Saint-Hilaire, Rougemont, Saint-Grégoire and Yamaska mountains form an imaginary line between the island of Montreal and the Appalachians. Our region also includes the Brome, Sutton, Owl's Head and Orford mountains, four major ski centers. The region is crossed by several major rivers (including the Richelieu, the Yamaska, St-François, Nicolet and Acadia rivers).

Beautiful and vast lakes are also part of our geography, namely lakes Champlain, Brome, Memphremagog, Massawippi and Lac Brompton. The main cities of Montérégie with a population greater than 40,000 inhabitants in descending order: Longueuil, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Brossard, Granby, Saint-Hyacinthe, Châteauguay, Boucherville, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield and MRC Roussillon. Longueuil, being the largest suburb south of Montreal, with over 400,000 inhabitants, is the nerve center of the Montérégie. The region also has the Amerindian reserves of Akwesasne, Kahnawake and Odanak.

The main highways running through the Montérégie are 10, 15, 20, 30, 35 and 55. Region 15 of IPA Canada has among its ranks members who come from various police forces such as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Sureté du Quebec, border services, PeaceKeepers, National Defense and several municipal police forces in our region. The region offers you to visit magnificent vineyards and orchards on its territory where our winegrowers and apple growers will be proud to welcome you to their estates, to the tasting of their wines or cider, but also to the discovery of their know-how and their passion for the “terroir” of our region.
